Chances are that if you are reading this article you are a person who has spent a great deal of time and money on your health issues, emotional challenges, or personal development and perhaps you intuitively sense that there must be a better way. Or, maybe you have never heard of this healing modality and the word “energy” might sound strange to you, especially since it is coupled with the word “psychology”; and you are just curios to learn more about what this exactly entails.

Your energy has far more power than you can ever imagine. There is energy in the words you speak, the thoughts you think, in your emails and text messages as well as your physical presence. Everything in the Universe is made up of energy, from the chair that you are sitting on, to this article that you are reading, to your own physical body, the thoughts that you are thinking and the emotions that you experience every moment of every day.

As Albert Einstein stated, “Everything is Energy and that is all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you can not help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics. “

What is “Energy Psychology”?

Energy Psychology is a collection of holistic mind-body approaches for understanding and improving human functioning and it allows people to do one of three things:

1) Reduce or eliminate negative emotional reactions such as anxiety, anger or self-criticism.
2) Reduce or eliminate blocks to performance as well as limiting beliefs.
3) Enter or maintain a higher functioning performance state.

Energy Psychology focuses on the relationship between thoughts, emotions, sensations and behaviors, and known bioenergy systems (such as meridians and the biofield). These systems and processes exist, and interact, within individuals and between people, and they are also influenced by cultural and environmental factors.

The term “energy” refers to the energy system of the human body. This system has three main components/fields:

1) The overall biofield that surrounds the body (aka “aura field”).
2) The distribution centers of energy known as the chakras (this is where energy is stored in the body).
3) The channels through which energy flows known as the meridian systems described in the acupuncture or Qigong.

The fundamental premise of Energy Psychology is that the cause of all negative emotions is the disturbance in the body’s energy system. Furthermore, most Energy Psychology approaches also recognize that unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to many physical pains and diseases. I’m a firm believer that the body is the last place for an emotion to show up in. So by the time the body gets ill, I know that my client has been ignoring some emotion for a long time and the body is the last resort to “notify” them and give them the opportunity to heal this.

A basic principle underlying Energy Psychology is the idea that traumatic memories and fears are challenging for some individuals because these memories and fears create a state called hyperarousal. Hyperarousal can be described by increased psychological and physiological activity involving muscular tension, feelings of dread, jumpiness, decreased tolerance for pain, increased emotional response, and difficulty sleeping. Different types of therapy that treat conditions such as anxiety and posttraumatic stress, help people to reduce states of hyperarousal.

Specific to Energy Psychology is the theory that when we stimulate the meridian points on our bodies, we literally send a calming signal to the amygdala of the brain to help reduce hyperarousal. When this reduction in hyperarousal is paired with the memory of or exposure to things that produce anxiety and negative emotion, the mind and the body become better equipped to create new, healthier responses.
The physical stimulation of meridian/acupressure points create electrical and chemical signals in the brain that help to normalize cortisol levels and balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, thus decreasing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress, among other concerns.

Energy Psychology approaches “issues” from a different perspective, rather than talking through issues, rather than trying to find out why we do certain things, it works with the energy fields of the body. Energy Psychology is the umbrella name for energy approaches such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Reiki, The Emotion Code, Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) and Energy Medicine to name a few. The interesting thing about all of these approaches is that their most basic form can be easily learned as a self-help technique to empower individuals to rapidly change their ongoing life experience. I personally in my practice, believe in empowering my clients, so that after working with them for a few sessions, they can walk away empowered to help themselves whenever something challenging comes up for them in the future. I don’t believe in clients being dependent on their therapist for every single challenge that presents itself in their lives.

Energy Psychology in Practice:

Energy Psychology is practiced by any type of helping professional such as medical doctors, counselors, psychologists and holistic healers. And it is used to treat conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, phobias, addictions, and a variety of other mental health and physical conditions. I also frequently see children and students dealing with exam & school stress, clients who have blocks and limiting beliefs around work, finances, love, etc. It’s absolutely amazing the array of issues one can work with and efficiently clear up with Energy Psychology approaches.

Life can be fun and joyous, you don’t have to suffer with emotional pain or endure physical pains and aches. You can have all your wildest dreams and visions come true. You might ask but how? By changing your ENERGY!
